Private hydrants
Private hydrant systems for firefighting are often installed on larger sites such as manufacturing plants, industrial estates, or military bases, to provide an on-site source of water to enable the Fire Brigade to firefight.
They can be extended from the water authorities mains or from a dedicated storage tank and pump system with underground piping to hydrant valves. These act as an outlet for the Fire Brigade to connect to.
The water is pumped through the hydrant valve where it is pressurised by the fire tender and then divided into hose streams for firefighting.
The hydrant valves should be located no more than 90m from an entry point to the building and not more than 90m apart. They should also be accessible at all times – away from car parking or other traffic routes.
